Can you imagine the roar of engines and the thrill of speed? Right here at Ardmore Aerodrome, the air crackles with the ghosts of races past. Ardmore Aerodrome wasn’t always just for planes. From 1954 to 1962, this airfield transformed into a thrilling race track for the New Zealand Grand Prix. Picture 70,000 spectators crowding the edges of the makeshift circuit in 1954 and 1955, their cheers echoing across the runways. The two-mile circuit, cleverly utilizing the sealed runways, became a stage for legendary drivers like Jack Brabham and Stirling Moss. A dark day fell upon Ardmore Aerodrome on January 12, 1957. British racing driver Ken Wharton met a tragic end, crashing his Ferrari Monza during the Grand Prix. This poignant event marked a turning point. The decision was made to open Ardmore Aerodrome to general aviation, and the Grand Prix eventually moved to a purpose-built facility in Pukekohe. Today, Ardmore Aerodrome is a hub of activity for general aviation. The New Zealand Warbirds Association calls this place home, their classic aircraft a testament to aviation history. Flying schools, maintenance businesses, and aircraft restoration projects hum with life around the aprons. Look around. You’ll see buildings nestled to the north, west, south, and southeast, evidence of the diverse operations here. The control tower, a silent sentinel in the center of the field, no longer directs air traffic. It now serves as a UNICOM service, a vital link for pilots. Ardmore Aerodrome remains a busy hub, its history interwoven with the thrill of racing and the steady pulse of general aviation.
