One quiet morning in 1861, the first church bells rang out across the newly settled Ardmore. This marked the completion of St Peters Church, a vital hub for the growing community. Ardmore, a rural locality nestled southeast of Auckland’s bustling city center, was beginning to carve its own identity. Ardmore’s tranquility, a mere 27 km from the Auckland CBD, belied a vibrant past and future. The original St Peters Church sadly met its demise in a fire in 1892. From its ashes rose St James Church, built on the same hallowed ground the following year. Over a century later, in 1961, two magnificent stained-glass windows were installed in St James, commemorating a century of faith in Ardmore. The heart of Ardmore beats to the rhythm of aircraft engines. Ardmore Airport, a surprisingly busy hub, bustles with activity from the Ardmore Flying School. This airport has even played host to roaring race cars. In the 1950s and 1960s, before the completion of Pukekohe Park Raceway, the aerodrome transformed into a thrilling circuit for the NZ Grand Prix. Legends like Bruce McLaren, Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss, and Prince Bira graced the track, leaving their tire marks on Ardmore’s history. But Ardmore’s contributions extend beyond aviation and motorsport. Education has flourished here too. From 1948 to 1974, Ardmore housed the Ardmore Teachers’ Training College. Established to address the post-World War II teacher shortage, this was New Zealand’s only fully residential teachers’ college. It nurtured approximately 8,500 teachers, shaping the future of education in the country. A memorial stone now stands as a silent testament to this era. In the same year, 1948, Auckland University’s School of Engineering found a temporary home in Ardmore’s former military barracks and hangars. Offering Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering degrees, it served as a launchpad for countless engineers until its relocation to central Auckland in 1969. Today, Ardmore retains its charm, a blend of rural tranquility and historical significance. Ardmore School, a co-educational primary school, continues the legacy of learning in this unique corner of Auckland.
