What does the name Ardleigh Green mean? It means “heath clearing” or perhaps more specifically “clearing in the heather”. Welcome to Ardleigh Green in east London. It is part of the London Borough of Havering. This area is 15.5 miles east-northeast of Charing Cross.

Ardleigh Green is mainly residential. But let’s delve into its history. Until at least the early 17th century, this place was known as Hardley Green. You may find it under different spellings. It was an enlargement of a hamlet within the parish of Hornchurch.

Hornchurch, Havering-atte-Bower, and Romford formed the Liberty of Havering. This was not a Hundred. The three old churches remained of chapel and chapelry administrative status. The liberty matched the ancient parish of Hornchurch. This provided a substantial living for the parish priest.

The first written name was Haddeleye. All later forms show a clear corruption or progression. This comes from the Old English words hǣth and lēah. The name “Hardley Green” last appeared in 1883. It was in that year’s Ordnance Survey map.

Ardleigh Green has a small set of shops for its residents. The area naturally drains to form the headwaters of a stream. This is The Ravensbourne. It briefly flows before joining the River Rom.

If you need to travel, the nearest railway stations are Gidea Park, Harold Wood, and Emerson Park. London Bus services connect Ardleigh Green to Hornchurch, Gidea Park, and Romford.

Ardleigh Green is also home to educational institutions. There is a combined junior and primary school. You’ll also find Havering College of Further and Higher Education here.

Notably, Ardleigh Green Junior School is an “outstanding” school. It achieved the top Ofsted rating after an inspection in December 2023. The school has been rated “outstanding” four times since 1999. This includes quality of education, behavior and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management.

Bullying is rare at the school. Safeguarding arrangements are effective. The school converted to an academy in December 2022. Working with parents is a significant factor in the school’s success.

As you explore Ardleigh Green, remember its past. From Hardley Green to a thriving residential area with excellent schools. It showcases a blend of history and community spirit.
