High on the Ardetzenberg mountain stands the Wildpark Feldkirch. A haven for wildlife it’s a beloved spot for families. But its story began not with grand plans but with a stubborn ibex named Felix.

In 1963 a Feldkirch businessman Karl Lampert had a vision. He wanted to create a place where children could experience nature. He envisioned a wildlife park on Ardetzenberg. This wasn’t just a whim. It was a response to a growing disconnect between people and the natural world. Children increasingly only knew wild animals from books.

The first step was acquiring animals. Felix an ibex from a Swiss zoo was destined for Gargellen. He had other ideas. Felix escaped becoming a loner roaming near settlements. Catching him proved surprisingly difficult. One attempt involved pear slices but failed. Months later they finally captured Felix in Dornbirn.

He found a new home on Ardetzenberg. The city of Feldkirch and volunteers helped build enclosures. Soon fallow deer and red deer joined Felix. A female ibex and her fawn turned the lone ibex into a family man.

On November 16 1963 despite poor weather the Wildpark Feldkirch officially opened. Guests press and even radio broadcasters attended the event on Ardetzenberg. The park continued to grow. New enclosures a service building paths benches and a fountain were added. Today the Ardetzenberg’s Wildpark has a kiosk a playground and a barbecue area.

It’s home to around 140 animals including wild boar marmots donkeys lynx and wolves. One game keeper initially cared for the animals. Now there is a manager an animal keeper a forester and more. Many volunteers contribute countless hours. The park remains free thanks to sponsorship and donations.

Today you stand on the Ardetzenberg looking down. You can see the result of Lampert’s vision. A place where Felix’s stubbornness inadvertently helped create a thriving wildlife park. It’s a testament to community effort and a love of nature. A reminder that even a stubborn ibex can play a part in a great story. Enjoy your visit to this special place.
