Have you ever heard of a city named after a billionaire’s hobby farm? Welcome to Arden Hills, a charming city in Minnesota, where history and modern life intertwine seamlessly. The story of Arden Hills begins with Joseph Hackney, a wealthy senator, who established Arden Farms, his personal farm, in 1906. The city’s name is said to have originated from this farm. Arden Hills, a sprawling city that once boasted rolling hills carved by glaciers, was originally part of Mounds View Township. Later, in 1951, it was incorporated as a separate city in response to a request for annexation by neighboring New Brighton. Over the years, Arden Hills grew, becoming a thriving community thanks to its strategic location and access to major highways, roads, and lakes. The city is home to two major corporations, Boston Scientific and Land O’Lakes, and is also home to two universities, Bethel University and the University of Northwestern.

Arden Hills’ story has a unique, military chapter. In 1941, the U.S. government purchased a vast expanse of farmland, nearly a third of the city, to establish the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant. During World War II, this arsenal was a buzzing hub, employing over 26,000 people who produced billions of rounds of ammunition. It was a crucial part of the American war effort and brought about much growth to the area. The ammunition plant is no longer in operation, but its legacy lives on. It was later decommissioned and the area transformed into a mixed-use development called Rice Creek Commons. The remaining portion is now utilized by the Minnesota Army National Guard and the Army Reserve as a training site.
