Later, in 1951, it was incorporated as a separate city in response to a request for annexation by neighboring New Brighton. During World War II, this arsenal was a buzzing hub, employing over 26,000 people who produced billions of rounds of ammunition. It was a crucial part of the American war effort and brought about much growth to the area. The ammunition plant is no longer in operation, but its legacy lives on. It was later decommissioned and the area transformed into a mixed-use development called Rice Creek Commons. The remaining portion is now utilized by the Minnesota Army National Guard and the Army Reserve as a training site.
