Before you stands the Archivo General del Ejército a treasure trove of Argentina’s military history. This imposing building wasn’t always a repository of historical documents.

The Archivo General del Ejército wasn’t always what it is today. In 1881 it opened its doors as the Casa de la Moneda. This is where banknotes were printed. Its construction followed the passing of Law 733 in 1875. That law also established the “Peso Fuerte” as the national currency.

Long before the printing presses hummed this site had a different purpose. During the 18th century it housed the Hospital del Rey. Later in the 19th century it became the Cuartel de la Partida. This was responsible for neighborhood security. The Casa de la Moneda operated here until 1944. An annex stood nearby on Balcarce Street.

From 1944 until 1979 the building served as the headquarters of the Dirección Nacional de Empleo. This was under the Ministry of Public Works. In 1979 the building transferred to the Army’s High Command. The Archivo General del Ejército and the Servicio Histórico relocated here. They’d previously been on Azopardo Street.

On September 4 1979 Decree No 2186 declared this building a National Historic Monument. The Archivo General del Ejército and the Servicio Histórico merged in 2019. They became the Dirección del Servicio Histórico del Ejército.

This impressive archive holds over 350000 files. These document deceased military personnel throughout Argentinan history starting in 1810. It also preserves records from all wars campaigns and battles involving the Argentine Army.

Today the Archivo General del Ejército building is a bustling hub of activity. It houses the Argentine Military History Institute. The Army Evaluation Commission is also located here. The Directorate of the Army Historical Service resides within its walls. Step inside and immerse yourselves in the rich tapestry of Argentina’s military past. The stories held within these walls are waiting to be discovered.
