What exactly is an “Archenteron”? That’s the question many visitors ask when they first encounter this curious sculpture. Right here, nestled amongst the trees of Silverwood Park, stands the Archenteron Sculpture. This isn’t just any random assortment of wood, though. The Archenteron was conceived and constructed by a group of art students from Bethel University under the guidance of Professor Kenneth Steinbach. They chose the name “Archenteron” for a very specific reason. In biology, the archenteron is a cavity that forms in the early stages of an embryo’s development, eventually becoming the digestive tract. The sculpture, with its two coils of vertical ash planks forming a winding passageway, echoes this organic process, reminding us of the intricate connection between humans and nature.
