Picture this. You stand before the Arap Mosque in Istanbul. Its weathered stones whisper tales of centuries. This unassuming mosque holds a secret. It was once a Roman Catholic church.

The Arap Mosque is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to Istanbul’s rich history. Originally a small chapel dedicated to Saint Paul it was built in 1233. Dominican friars expanded it into a larger church in 1325. They named it the Church of San Domenico. For two centuries it served the Catholic community.

Then came the Ottoman conquest. Between 1475 and 1478 Sultan Mehmed II transformed it into a mosque. It became known as the Galata Mosque. A fascinating detail is its Gothic architecture. It’s the only example of its kind remaining in Istanbul. This unique style with lancet windows and a bell tower stands in contrast to the city’s Byzantine churches.

The mosque’s current name has a poignant origin. Sultan Bayezid II gifted it to Muslim refugees. These were Andalusians fleeing the Spanish Inquisition in 1492. They settled in Galata. This is how the mosque became the Arap Mosque. The name means Arab Mosque in Turkish.

The building has weathered many storms. Fires damaged it. In 1734-35 Saliha Sultan renovated it. She changed some of the Gothic features to Ottoman styles. The mosque’s minaret was once a bell tower. Think of the countless prayers echoing within its walls over the ages.

During restorations in the early 20th century workers discovered something remarkable. Genoese tombstones lay beneath the floor. These date from the 14th and 15th centuries. They now reside in the Istanbul Archaeology Museums. These silent stones add another layer to the mosque’s compelling story.

The Arap Mosque stands as a powerful symbol. It shows the blending of cultures and religions in Istanbul’s vibrant history. Its Gothic minaret remains a striking reminder of its past life as a church. It’s a place where history and faith intertwine. Spend some time appreciating the story woven into every stone of this remarkable building.
