Long ago Bukit Larangan stood tall. This Forbidden Hill held secrets. It was the home of Singapore’s first kings. They ruled the island in the 14th century.

Bukit Larangan or Arang Mountain as it’s sometimes called is more than just a hill. It’s a place steeped in history. Archaeological digs unearthed pottery coins and Chinese ceramics. These treasures tell a story. They reveal Singapore’s role as a bustling trading center. This was even before the British arrived in 1819.

Imagine the ships sailing into the harbor. Merchants from distant lands bartered their goods. The air hummed with activity. The scent of spices filled the breeze. This ancient trade linked Singapore to its neighbors. It extended its influence across the region.

Maps from the 15th century and beyond reveal Bukit Larangan’s significance. The India Tercera Nuova Tavola shows “Cinca Pula”. Scholars believe this refers to Singapore itself. Another map by Manuel Godinho de Erédia in 1604 shows “Sincapura”. It details many places like Blakang Mati now Sentosa. The Mao Kun map from the Ming Dynasty labels a hill “Temasek”. This underscores the hill’s importance throughout history.

The Malay Annals a collection of stories tell of Sang Nila Utama. He founded Singapura or Lion City. Legend says he saw a lion on the island. This sparked the name change from Temasek to Singapura. The Annals also feature Badang a mighty strongman. They recount the garfish attack a legendary event that threatened the city.

Even John Crawfurd a British Resident recorded the ancient walls around the base of Bukit Larangan. He described a large plain ending at a 150-foot high hill. He noted the walls and moat suggesting a well-defended settlement. This reinforces the strategic importance of the hill.

Today Bukit Larangan Arang Mountain stands as a testament to Singapore’s rich past. It is a silent witness to centuries of trade battles and cultural exchange. Exploring this hill is like stepping back in time. It’s a journey through Singapore’s fascinating history. You can almost hear the echoes of the past whispering secrets on the wind.
