Designed as a waka prow, the Aramarama Millennium Footbridge isn’t just a way to cross Rewarewa Creek. It’s a piece of art. It gracefully connects the footpath and Mission Bay’s sandy shores. This bridge, part of the Tamaki Drive Coastal Path, was commissioned at the turn of the century by the Eastern Bays Community Board. The Aramarama Millennium Footbridge opened in 2001. It cost the Auckland City Council around $100,000. Artist Virginia King and architect Chris Thom collaborated on the design. Their vision combined the protective image of a palisade with the aerial roots of a pohutukawa tree. The design also acknowledges Ngāti Whātua by incorporating the form of a waka prow. The Aramarama Millennium Footbridge links the past and present. It beautifully blends urban design and artistry. The steel rods create an organic feel. They mimic the curves of a waka prow, connecting to the nearby sea. The rods also echo the roots of the pohutukawa tree and the outline of Rangitoto Island as seen from Mission Bay. This striking footbridge, a local icon, offers more than just passage. It enriches Mission Bay with its artistic presence and symbolic meaning. The name Aramarama, meaning pathway of the moon, adds a touch of magic to this functional artwork. In 2009, the bridge underwent significant repairs. These included recoating, waterproofing, and reinforcement. These repairs cost a substantial $70,000. The bridge spans 17 meters in length and stands 2 meters high. It’s constructed of steel and concrete.
