Born from unrest the Argentine Catholic Apostolic Church stands before you. A product of the 1970s its roots lie in social turmoil and right-wing politics. The Argentine Catholic Apostolic Church wasn’t just a religious movement. It was entwined with the schemes of José López Rega. He was a powerful government advisor nicknamed El Brujo the Sorcerer. The Argentine Catholic Apostolic Church became one of his pet projects.

This church. Founded in 1971 by Leonardo Morizio Dominguez it quickly gained notoriety. Dominguez was consecrated archbishop in 1972. He received his consecration from Luigi Mascolo the head of the Brazilian Catholic Apostolic Church. The Argentine Catholic Apostolic Church presented itself as a national church. For a brief period from 1978 to 1981 it was even officially registered.

But the Argentine Catholic Apostolic Church’s history isn’t without controversy. It was initially associated with right-wing extremism. The end of the military dictatorship in 1983 led to its deregistration. Despite this the church continued. It saw the ordination of several bishops including José Eugenio Tenca Rusconi and Dante Luis Bergonzi Moreno. Tenca Rusconi himself a former Roman Catholic priest.

The Argentine Catholic Apostolic Church’s journey has been fragmented. Internal schisms and divisions have plagued it. Numerous splinter groups emerged. Each with its own unique beliefs and practices. These included the Congregation of Mary Mystic Rose and the Liberal Apostolic Church of Christ. The Argentine Catholic Apostolic Church even faced accusations of scandalous actions. This included a roadside Requiem Mass accompanied by cuarteto music. This was held at the site of a fatal car accident involving a popular singer.

Yet the Argentine Catholic Apostolic Church continues to exist. It stands as a testament to the complex interplay of religion and politics in Argentina. Its story a blend of ambition controversy and enduring faith. It’s a church that is part of Argentina’s rich and sometimes unusual history. A history still whispered today. The Argentine Catholic Apostolic Church stands as a unique reminder of this legacy. A lasting symbol in this bustling city.
