“A copy? Would you believe it?” The Apollon du Belvédère stands before you, a vision of timeless grace. It’s hard to imagine that this masterpiece, housed in the Louvre during Napoleon’s reign, isn’t even the original. This Apollon du Belvédère is a Roman copy, crafted meticulously in marble sometime between 120 and 140 AD. The original, a bronze imagined by the Greek sculptor Leochares, has been lost to time. But the Romans, with their reverence for Greek artistry, left us this breathtaking echo of its glory. Standing here, you can almost feel the tension in the god’s stance. Apollo, the archer, moments after releasing his arrow. His gaze, though, is fixed somewhere beyond, lost in the memory of the act. Or perhaps, in the contemplation of his divine power. Interestingly, when the Apollon du Belvédère was rediscovered in the late 15th century, it took some time to capture the artistic imagination. It wasn’t until Pope Julius II, a renowned patron of the arts, installed it in the Vatican’s Cortile del Belvedere around 1511 that the statue’s fame began to rise. From then on, it became an icon, inspiring artists like Michelangelo and Raphael, shaping the very ideals of beauty for generations to come. The Apollon du Belvédère isn’t just a statue. It’s a testament to the enduring power of art, a whisper of vanished civilizations, and a mirror reflecting our own fascination with beauty and the divine.
