Apelstein 8 is one of fifty such stones scattered throughout Leipzig and its surroundings. They mark the positions of armies during the epic Battle of Leipzig, also known as the Battle of the Nations. This particular stone commemorates the position of General Klenau and his 24,000 men of the 9th Austrian Corps. They stood here on October 16, 1813, during the Battle of Wachau, a precursor to the larger battle that would engulf Leipzig just days later. The inscription on Apelstein 8, weathered by time, clearly states “General Klenau, 9.Oest-Corps, 24000 M”. The reverse side reads “Schlacht bei WACHAU, 16. October 1813.” These Apelsteine, named after their creator, Leipzig citizen and writer Theodor Apel, are more than just markers. They are windows into a pivotal moment in European history. Apel, driven by a desire to make the battlefields more accessible and understandable, funded the placement of these stones from 1861 to 1864. He envisioned up to 60 locations, though not all came to fruition. Apelstein 8, like its counterparts, is designed with specific features to convey information. Its pointed top, marked with a “V”, signifies its association with the Allied forces. The “N” and rounded top designated Napoleonic troops. Arrows on the sides indicate the direction of the front lines. Imagine the scene: thousands of soldiers, arrayed in lines, the tension thick in the air. The fate of nations hung in the balance here in Großpösna, a small village caught in the maelstrom of a world-altering conflict. The Battle of Leipzig was a turning point in the Napoleonic Wars.
