Apelsteine are not just any stones. They mark important sites of the Battle of Leipzig. This battle was also known as the Battle of the Nations. There are 50 of these markers in total. Apelstein 44 included. They stand as silent witnesses to a conflict that reshaped the continent.

Theodor Apel was a writer from Leipzig. He commissioned these stones. He wanted to commemorate the Battle of Leipzig. The stones were erected between 1861 and 1865. A. F. Aster sculpted them.

The Battle of Leipzig raged from October 16 to 19, 1813. It pitted Napoleon’s French army against a coalition. The coalition included forces from Russia, Prussia, Austria, and Sweden. It was one of the largest battles in Europe before World War I.

Almost 600,000 soldiers were involved. The battle was incredibly bloody. The coalition won a decisive victory.

Apelstein 44 commemorates General Lieutenant von York and his 21,500 men. The inscription on the back marks the last rest. It was the last rest of the Silesian Landwehr. It was the night of October 15 to 16, 1813. This was before the Battle of Möckern.
