Apelstein 37 is one of fifty such obelisks. These markers commemorate the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. They were the brainchild of Theodor Apel a Leipzig citizen and writer. He erected 44 of these stones between 1861 and 1864. Six more followed thanks to private donations and various societies.

Each Apelstein tells a piece of the battle’s puzzle. This particular Apelstein 37 stands in Leipzig-Zentrum. Its inscription details General Dombrowski’s 5000-man strong unit. It was part of the battle’s chaos on October 18 1813.
