Gazing upon Apelstein 31, one might dismiss it as just another stone. But this obelisk whispers tales of a bygone era, a silent witness to the thunderous clash of empires. The Apelstein 31 Obelisk stands as a stark reminder of the Battle of Leipzig, also known as the Battle of Nations. This battle raged in October 1813, right here on the outskirts of Leipzig. Theodor Apel, a Leipzig writer, envisioned these stones. He sought to mark the positions of the armies that clashed in this monumental battle. Between 1861 and 1864, Apel funded the erection of 44 of these sandstone markers. Apelstein 31, specifically, points to the location of Marshal Lauriston’s II and V Corps. A force of 30,000 men poised for battle on that fateful October day. Apel’s system was ingenious. Odd-numbered stones, rounded at the top and marked with an “N,” denoted Napoleon’s troops. Even-numbered stones, pyramidal in shape and bearing a “V,” represented the Allied forces opposing him. Apelstein 31, with its “V” and pyramidal top, clearly marks an Allied position. The inscription tells us more. “Victor Lauriston II. und V. Corps 30000 Mann,” followed by “Schlacht bei Leipzig 18. October 1813” on the reverse. This simple inscription captures the scale and date of the conflict. Sadly, the original sandstone obelisks, including Apelstein 31, have succumbed to time and the elements. The Apelstein 31 Obelisk we see today is a replacement, often deviating in size and shape from Apel’s original design. Yet, it retains its core purpose. A memory etched in stone, reminding us of the tumultuous events that shaped the destiny of nations. The Apelstein 31 Obelisk is more than a stone. It is a portal to a pivotal moment in history. It invites us to reflect on the sacrifices made and the lives forever altered by the Battle of Nations.
