Imagine the echoes of marching feet. Hear the distant roar of cannons. It is 1813 and we stand near Apelstein 27.

This obelisk is one of 50 Apel-stones. They mark critical positions during the Battle of Leipzig. The writer Theodor Apel commissioned them. A. F. Aster sculpted them. These memorials went up between 1861 and 1865.

Apelstein 27 specifically commemorates Marshal MacDonald’s XI Corps. The inscription reads “MACDONALD XI. Corps. 12000 M.” It also notes “Schlacht bei LEIPZIG 18. October 1813”. That translates to “Battle of Leipzig 18th October 1813.” It tells a story of 12000 men under MacDonald’s command. They fought in this bloody conflict.

The Battle of Leipzig was also known as the Battle of the Nations. It raged from October 16th to 19th in 1813. Napoleon’s French army fought a coalition. Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden formed this coalition. This battle became a decisive victory for the coalition.

Nearly 600000 soldiers participated. This made it the largest European battle before World War I. It was the bloodiest battle of the Napoleonic Wars. The French suffered about 45000 killed or wounded. They also had 36000 captured. The coalition lost approximately 54000 men.

The aftermath was devastating. The sheer number of casualties overwhelmed resources. Care and burial became impossible. Typhus and cholera erupted in Leipzig. These diseases spread rapidly. They swept through Germany and then Europe.

Guido Theodor Apel designed these Apelsteine. He lived from 1811 to 1867. He wanted to show the Coalition armies’ locations. Each stone displays a number. It also shows the army’s name and commander. The number of soldiers is also noted. The battle name and date are inscribed.

Think about the scene on that October day. Visualize the clash of arms. Imagine the smoke and chaos. Apelstein 27 stands as a silent witness. It is a testament to the sacrifices made here. It also marks a turning point in European history. These stones remind us of the human cost of conflict. They also honor those who fought for their nations. They are lasting markers of a pivotal time.
