Beneath the vibrant hues of the playground at Apache Park, a story unfolds. It’s a story of transformation and community spirit. Apache Park in Des Plaines isn’t just a park. It’s a testament to what can happen when residents, the city, and the park district work together. This once ordinary space has blossomed into one of the most innovative parks in Des Plaines. Two playgrounds beckon with slides, swings, and climbing structures. Two shelters offer respite with picnic tables. A soccer field stands ready with permanent goals. Apache Park boasts beautifully decorated Peace Poles, created by the very residents who cherish this space. A walking/jogging path winds through the park, inviting leisurely strolls or invigorating runs. Benches offer quiet moments for reflection. And for those seeking a bit more exertion, Apache Park features five pieces of outdoor exercise equipment. This was the first installation of its kind in Des Plaines. Apache Park is designed with inclusivity in mind, meeting ADA guidelines. It’s a vibrant tapestry of color, fun, and accessibility. But the story of Apache Park doesn’t end there. It echoes a tradition that dates back to the founding of Apachi Day Camp in Lake Zurich. The Ellis Family, the camp’s founders, named it after the Apache Native American tribe of the Southwestern United States. This choice reflected a long-standing practice among summer camps. They often adopted names of Native American tribes to symbolize their connection to the outdoors and wilderness. In 1987, when JCC Chicago acquired the campgrounds, “Apache” became “Apachi”. This change subtly linked the day camp to JCC Chicago’s overnight camp, Camp Chi. “Chi” is an abbreviation for Chicago Hebrew Institute. While geographically separate, the shared naming convention whispers a connection. It speaks to a shared appreciation for nature and community. So next time you visit Apache Park, remember its story. It’s a story of evolution, collaboration, and a tribute to both local and broader traditions.
