Handlebar mustache groomed upwards and circular spectacles, echoing the gilded halo of a saint. That’s how the sculptor Mirsad Begi portrayed the painter Anton Ažbe in this bust. We are standing before the Anton Ažbe Bust in Munich’s Leopold Park. It commemorates a Slovene realist painter and teacher.

Anton Ažbe was born in 1862 and died in 1905. He made his mark not only as a painter but also as an educator. Many talented painters attended his private academy in Munich. This included Slovenians. The Anton Ažbe Bust stands not far from where his renowned school was located. It was unveiled in June 2004. The sculptor Mirsad Begi created it.

Begi depicted larger-than-life Slovenian personalities in various artistic media. He also created self-portraits and portraits of other elite members of society. One of these portraits is of Anton Ažbe. Begi portrayed Ažbe again the following year in his series depicting famous painters.

This sculpture is more intimate than the imposing bust in Munich. It centers only on the artist’s head. His head is cocked slightly to the left. The portrait exudes Begi’s artistic range. It shows his refinement and attention to detail. It also shows his capacity for perception.

Anton Ažbe was crippled since birth. He was orphaned at the age of eight. He learned painting as an apprentice to Janez Wolf. He also studied at the Academies in Vienna and Munich. At 30, Ažbe founded his own painting school in Munich. It became a popular attraction for Eastern European students.

Ažbe trained the “big four” Slovenian impressionists. They were Rihard Jakopič, Ivan Grohar, Matej Sternen and Matija Jama. He also taught a generation of Russian painters. These included Ivan Bilibin and Wassily Kandinsky. Serbian painters such as Nadežda Petrović also studied with him. Czech painter Ludvik Kuba was another notable student.

Ažbe’s training methods were adopted by Beta and Rista Vukanović. They took over Kiril Kutlik’s atelier and school. Russian artists also used his methods. They used them both at home and in emigration.

Ažbe’s artistic legacy includes twenty-six graphic works. These are mostly classroom studies. They reside at the National Gallery of Slovenia. Some say he never reached his full potential as an artist.

He blended alcoholism with chain smoking. He was known for bitter loneliness and simple living in private. He also showed eccentric behavior in public. He protected his personal secrets. These remained a mystery even to his students and fellow teachers. The public transformed his death from cancer into an urban legend.

Look at the details of this Anton Ažbe Bust. Notice the mustache and spectacles. Begi captured Ažbe’s majestic characteristics. This monument ensures that Ažbe’s legacy lives on. He remains an important figure in Slovenian and European art history.
