Journey with me through time. We are standing before the Antikmuseet in Aarhus. This museum is a portal. It leads to the ancient Mediterranean.

The Antikmuseet isn’t just a collection of artifacts. It is a gateway to understanding civilizations long past. Founded in 1949, the museum began as a humble study collection. Professor P. J. Riis of Aarhus University had a vision. He wanted a space for classical archaeology.

Initially, the collection comprised 500 artifacts. These came from the National Museum. Plaster casts of antique sculptures from Aarhus Museum joined them. In 1971, the museum found its current home. It is located beneath Solgården. Professor Kristian Jeppesen championed this new exhibition area.

Over time, the Antikmuseet grew dramatically. Purchases, gifts and donations expanded the collection. It became more than a university resource. It blossomed into a museum for all. In 1986, it officially became the Antikmuseet. A renovation in 2003 opened the museum further to the public.

Today, the Antikmuseet boasts around 4000 original artifacts. These objects span Ancient Egypt, Greece, Etruria and Rome. Imagine holding a piece of history in your hand. These artifacts offer a tangible connection to the past.

Consider the Egyptian mummy. It once belonged to the temple singer Tabast. Amulets, clay figurines, and bronze bowls surround her. Incense tubs tell stories of ancient rituals.

Gaze upon the Greek ceramics. These include pieces from Mycenae, Athens and Corinthia. Decorated pottery showcases the artistry of the time. Votive offerings reveal religious beliefs. Burial gifts hint at ideas about the afterlife.

Everyday life in Roman society comes alive here. Lamps illuminate ancient homes. Utensils speak of daily routines. Keys unlock secrets of the past. Game pieces suggest leisure activities. Glassware reflects Roman innovation.

The Antikmuseet houses an impressive Greek coin collection. It is one of Northern Europe’s most extensive. It features about 2500 Greek and Roman coins. These coins range from East Greek city-states to Hellenic kingdoms. Roman coins evolved from metal lumps to engraved portraits of emperors.

Notably, the Antikmuseet has literary significance. It plays a central role in Svend Åge Madsen’s novel “Syv Aldres Galskab” from 1994.

Before you leave the Antikmuseet consider this. Each artifact whispers a story. They speak of empires, artistry and everyday existence. The museum is more than a building. It is a time capsule. It preserves echoes of the ancient world.
