How did this peaceful street earn a name as explosive as Rua da Fábrica da Pólvora? The name whispers of a fiery past. Right here in front of us once stood a gunpowder factory, the Antiga Fábrica da Pólvora. It began its life in 1690 as a rudimentary operation. Then in the early 1700s, King John V commissioned a grander factory. Imagine the rumble of carts, laden with dangerous cargo, making their way to this industrial heart. Their destination was a magnificent new factory designed by António Cremer. He was the kingdom’s superintendent of gunpowder at the time. Sadly, disaster struck in 1755. The Lisbon earthquake silenced the Antiga Fábrica da Pólvora forever. Production shifted to the older factory in Barcarena. While the factory is gone, its legacy remains imprinted on the Rua da Fábrica da Pólvora. Next time you stroll this quiet street, remember the explosive history hidden beneath your feet.
