Anthony and Louise Viaer Alumni Hall

On this site, students themselves helped build what we now know as the Anthony and Louise Viaer Alumni Hall. Constructed in 1914, this building originally served as the Administration Building for Tillotson College. This grand structure, designed in the Prairie School style, stands as a testament to the dedication and skill of the Huston-Tillotson University community. The Anthony and Louise Viaer Alumni Hall isn’t just a pretty facade. Its story is deeply intertwined with the history of the university. Imagine the hustle and bustle of student life as they learned trades and contributed to the very foundation of their institution by manufacturing the bricks for this very building. In a time when opportunities for African Americans were limited, Tillotson College, and later Huston-Tillotson University, provided not just an education but also practical skills. The legacy of Anthony E. Viaer, a distinguished alumnus from the class of 1958, lives on within these walls. His incredible generosity led to a $1 million scholarship fund that has undoubtedly changed the lives of countless students. This act of philanthropy led to the building being renamed in his and his wife Louise’s honor. The Anthony and Louise Viaer Alumni Hall stands as a symbol of enduring commitment to education and community.
