Born in Klein Schwechat near Vienna Anton Dreher was more than just a brewer. He was a visionary a pioneer. He revolutionized the beer industry. He stands before you a testament to his legacy.

This is the Antal Dreher story a saga of brewing innovation. Anton Dreher didn’t just brew beer he crafted a legend. His family had a long history in brewing stretching back generations. His father Franz Anton Dreher owned a brewery in Klein Schwechat. Anton however had bigger plans.

After an apprenticeship and a journeyman’s tour through Germany England and Scotland Anton returned. He took over his mother’s brewery in 1836. He wasn’t satisfied with traditional methods. He experimented. He combined the crispness of lager with the paler hues of English ale. He created Schwechater Lagerbier a new style of beer. This Viennese style beer was a sensation. It required cool temperatures for maturation and storage. This led to the term lager meaning storehouse.

Anton Dreher was a shrewd businessman. He expanded his brewery. He bought more land growing his own hops and barley. This protected him from market fluctuations. He built extensive cellars for better storage. He expanded his market into Bohemia and Hungary. He even purchased breweries in Michelob and Kőbánya. The Danube River provided ample water for his growing operation. His success earned him recognition. Emperor Franz Joseph I visited his brewery. He won awards at international exhibitions. His fortune was estimated at 8 to 10 million Gulden when he died suddenly.

Anton’s son Anton Jr. continued his father’s work. He expanded exports. He even invented a cooling machine during a winter without ice. The Schwechat brewery became the most productive in the world under his leadership. It even merged with other breweries in Vienna. He also received numerous awards for his beer.

But the story isn’t just about beer. The Dreher Brewery and Tavern played a key role in Vienna’s Social Democrat movement after World War I. It became a meeting place for local socialists. Anton Dreher Jr. entrusted his brother Jenő with the management of the Kőbánya brewery in Hungary. This brewery flourished. It became a corporation and a market leader. After the Drehers the Austrian brewery became a consortium. The Hungarian side was nationalized.

The Dreher name and legacy live on. The Kőbánya brewery continues to produce Lager. The Dreher Beer Museum stands as a tribute. It is a reminder of the family’s contribution to brewing and Hungarian history. It preserves their story for future generations. So remember the name Antal Dreher. Remember his innovation. Remember his vision. Remember his impact on the world of beer.
