Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Karlsruhe lies a school that whispers stories of resilience and remembrance. The Anne-Frank-Schule Karlsruhe stands as a testament to the power of education and the enduring legacy of Anne Frank. Opened on September 13, 1965, as a modest Volksschule with just four classrooms, the Anne-Frank-Schule quickly blossomed. The burgeoning Oberreut district, newly inhabited from 1964, saw a rapid influx of families. This growth necessitated immediate expansion. More classes were formed, and additional pavilions were erected. By 1968, the school’s population had swelled to 530 children, learning within fifteen classrooms. The Anne-Frank-Schule continued to grow. Between 1968 and 1970, two large, parallel, cuboid-shaped buildings were constructed. These structures, connected by Übergangsbereich, became the school’s new heart. In the 1971/72 school year, the Anne-Frank-Schule, then known as Grund- und Hauptschule Oberreut, reached a peak enrollment of 1,061 students in thirty classes. Change continued to shape the Anne-Frank-Schule. In 1978, the Hauptschule relocated to the Bildungszentrum Südwest, only to return in 1984. During this interim, the vacated Südtrakt provided a temporary home for the Kimmelmannschule. The Anne-Frank-Schule further evolved in 1991, embracing the Ganztagsschule model. This was followed by the introduction of the Werkrealschule in 1998/99. This offered students a pathway to achieving the Mittlere Reife, a significant milestone in the German education system. In March 1999, the school was officially renamed Anne-Frank-Schule. Recent years have brought further transformations to the Anne-Frank-Schule. The schoolyard has been revitalized, with trees planted, modern seating installed, and a climbing wall added. A fenced Minifuβballfeld now stands beside the sports grounds, and a new annex building houses a staff room, creative spaces, art rooms, a reading room, and a quiet room. The Anne-Frank-Schule continued its evolution. In 2014/15, the Ganztagsgrundschule was implemented. This coincided with the school’s transformation into a Gemeinschaftsschule. This modern school model enables students to pursue various educational tracks, leading to the Hauptschule, Realschule, or Gymnasium Abschlüsse. Today, the Anne-Frank-Schule not only serves as a place of learning for its diverse student body but also as a training ground for future educators. It serves as a vital Ausbildungsschule for student teachers from the Pädagogische Hochschule Karlsruhe, perpetuating a cycle of educational excellence. The Anne-Frank-Schule in Karlsruhe is more than just a school. It is a living testament to the transformative power of education, a place where resilience is nurtured, and the memory of Anne Frank inspires generations to learn, grow, and strive for a better future.
