Anil. A neighborhood pulsating with life, nestled in the vibrant West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Anil. It’s a place where the echoes of history intertwine with the rhythms of modern Brazil. Let’s explore this captivating suburb together, uncovering the stories etched within its streets. Anil derives its name from a rather humble source: the anil plant. Imagine, during colonial times, this area was teeming with these native shrubs, their fruits yielding a rich, blue dye. This dye, prized for its quality, became a sought-after commodity, making its way across the Atlantic to the markets of Europe. The Anil River itself served as a vital waterway, transporting this precious cargo to Barra da Tijuca, then onwards to the bustling port of Rio de Janeiro, destined for European shores. The anil trade flourished here in Jacarepaguá until the 18th century. Like much of Rio de Janeiro state, the landscape then transformed, giving way to vast coffee plantations. But the legacy of the anil plant remains, imprinted in the very name of this neighborhood. Anil, however, holds more stories than just its namesake plant. The area encompassing Anil, Gardênia Azul, and Cidade de Deus was once part of the sprawling Fazenda do Engenho D’Água. The original farmhouse still stands proudly on a hill, a silent witness to centuries of change. Located at the intersection of Estrada do Gabinal, Rua Edgard Werneck, Avenida Tenente-Coronel Muniz de Aragão, and Avenida Ayrton Senna, this historic building is now protected by IPHAN and remains in the hands of the Baron da Taquara’s descendants. Nearby, you’ll find the charming Capela de Nossa Senhora da Cabeça, Jacarepaguá’s oldest chapel, also a protected historical site. Both the farmhouse and the chapel date back to 1616, built by Rodrigo da Veiga. This estate represents the final holding of the Correia de Sá family in Jacarepaguá, a lineage stretching back to colonial times and lasting throughout the Empire. The property was passed down through generations, always to the eldest son, as dictated by the terms of a “morgadio,” a type of entailment preventing its sale. Anil’s transformation from a rural landscape to a vibrant suburb is a story of contrasts. Here, small favelas coexist alongside middle-class houses and gated communities, reflecting the socio-economic diversity of Rio. While the commercial center still caters primarily to a working-class population, the winds of change are blowing. Private investment is expected to reshape the area in the coming years, mirroring the transformations already seen in Freguesia de Jacarepaguá and Taquara. Anil stands as a testament to the ever-evolving tapestry of Rio de Janeiro.
