Have you ever heard of a place where education and entertainment intertwine? Right here at the Andrews Amphitheater, that fusion comes alive. The Andrews Amphitheater, nestled within the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus, first opened its doors, or rather its open-air embrace, in 1935. This venue, also known as Andrews Outdoor Theater or UH Manoa Andrews Amphitheater, has been a vibrant hub for students and the community ever since. The amphitheater holds a special place in the university’s heart. It’s named after Arthur Lynn Andrews, a pivotal figure in the university’s early development. Arriving in 1910 as an English professor, Andrews witnessed the university grow from a mere 17 students in a converted residence to a thriving institution. He served as dean of faculties until 1936, leaving an indelible mark on the university’s growth.

The Andrews Amphitheater itself was a product of the Great Depression. Built with a combination of university funds and support from the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, it provided much-needed employment during a difficult time. Its design, by Ralph Fishbourne, aimed to accommodate a staggering 5,500 people. Imagine the energy of a full house here, under the Hawaiian sky. The stage, partially below grade, extends into the surrounding lawn, creating a unique and adaptable performance space. Interesting fact: Some of the stone used for the seating actually came from Fort Ruger. The amphitheater was initially called Andrews Amphitheatre. But President Gregg Sinclair later renamed it “Arthur L. Andrews Outdoor Theatre”. Sinclair believed “Amphitheatre” implied a fully enclosed structure, which this open-air venue certainly wasn’t.

The Andrews Amphitheater has resonated with music from diverse genres over the years. From the electrifying performance of Tool in 2006 to the mellow vibes of Beck in 1999, and the raw energy of Green Day in 1998, the stage has seen it all. Even the Spin Doctors graced this stage in 1993, their funky rhythms echoing across the lawn. The Andrews Amphitheater continues to be a cultural cornerstone. It hosts a variety of events, from graduation ceremonies to speeches and of course, unforgettable concerts. The Manoa Jazz & Heritage Festival is a regular highlight, drawing jazz enthusiasts each autumn. So the next time you’re at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, take a moment to appreciate the Andrews Amphitheater. It stands not just as a performance space. It represents the enduring spirit of the university and its rich history. A place born during hardship, nurtured by visionaries like Arthur Lynn Andrews, and brought to life by the music and memories it has held over the decades.
