“Dédé,” a voice called out, echoing the nickname of a cycling legend. Right here, at this very spot, rests André Leducq, a name that resonates with triumph and resilience in the world of cycling. André Leducq isn’t just a name etched on a tombstone. It’s a story of grit, determination, and the unwavering spirit of a champion. Born in 1904, Leducq’s journey began with a gold medal at the 1924 Olympics in the team time trial. He then conquered the amateur world road championship in 1927, a feat that propelled him into the professional arena. The Tour de France became his stage, and he danced across it with remarkable prowess. In 1927, he burst onto the scene, securing fourth place overall and seizing four stage victories. This was just a prelude to his future triumphs. The year 1928 saw him claim second place in the Tour and conquer the prestigious Paris-Roubaix. Yet, the pinnacle of his career was yet to come. André Leducq etched his name into cycling history by winning the Tour de France in 1930 and 1932. His 1930 victory is a testament to his indomitable spirit. A horrific crash in stage 16 left him unconscious. Upon regaining consciousness, his teammates, embodying the essence of teamwork, rallied around him. They helped him back onto his bike and literally dragged him to the finish line. Fate dealt another blow when a broken pedal caused a second crash. In his despair, Leducq wept and yearned for his mother. Amidst the chaos, his teammate Bidot, a beacon of resourcefulness, secured a replacement pedal from a spectator’s bike. Despite his bloodied leg and the lingering shock from the falls, Leducq’s spirit refused to break. Though he contemplated abandoning the race, his teammate Pélissier spurred him on, reminding him of the yellow jersey that awaited him. Fueled by the collective will of his team, Leducq not only finished the stage but also emerged victorious. He ultimately clinched the 1930 Tour de France title. André Leducq, “Dédé,” the joyful warrior, retired in 1938. His legacy extends far beyond his two Tour de France victories and includes a Paris-Tours win in 1931, the Critérium National in 1933, and the Critérium des As in 1934. His name echoes through the annals of cycling history, a symbol of resilience, camaraderie, and an unyielding pursuit of victory. His story is a powerful reminder that even in the face of adversity, the human spirit, when bolstered by teamwork and determination, can achieve extraordinary feats. And here, at his final resting place, we honor André Leducq, a true champion.
