Right here, the Andover Estate stands as a testament to North London’s ever-evolving story. This large Islington Borough Council housing estate is bordered by Hornsey Road, Seven Sisters Road, Durham Road, and Birnam Road. Its postcode is N7.
Let’s rewind to the mid-20th century. This area of Holloway was rebuilt after streets of old housing were knocked down in the 1960s. The Andover Estate emerged as a model housing solution. It provided over 1000 homes in an area of high deprivation.
The older part of the Andover Estate along Andover Road was built in 1938. The newer buildings were constructed from 1973 to 1979. Keep an eye out for the three uniquely designed triangular buildings. These are Didbin, Noll, and Docura Houses. They were named after local architects.

Rapper Skinnyman spent time here. His acclaimed album Council Estate of Mind is about his upbringing in this area. Andy Lysandrou, one half of the music duo Truesteppers, grew up on the Andover Estate. John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten also grew up nearby.
On the edge of the Andover Estate, you’ll find Harmsworth Hospital. This animal hospital was the setting for the TV series Animal Hospital.
Even popular culture has graced the Andover Estate. A segment on The Catherine Tate Show was filmed on Selden Walk. The comedy Chewing Gum was also partly filmed here.
Today, efforts are underway to capture the stories of Andover Estate residents. The Life on the Andover Estate project aims to give residents a voice. It uses oral history to explore their experiences and perspectives. The project seeks to uncover previously unheard narratives and celebrate the community’s history.
Researchers from London Metropolitan University are leading this effort. They hope to create a lasting archive of the estate’s rich history. This will inform policies and practices designed to benefit the people of the Andover Estate. The project explores themes of family, nation, crime, and immigration. It evaluates the provision of services to residents, like health, education, and housing.
