“Rio dos Morcegos?” a curious voice piped up. “What a strange name! Why would anyone call a place ‘River of Bats’?” We’re standing at the edge of Andaraí, a historic neighborhood nestled in Rio de Janeiro’s vibrant North Zone. Andaraí’s name, as you just heard, does indeed have a peculiar origin. It comes from the indigenous Tupi phrase “andirá-y”, meaning “River of Bats”. This refers to the Rio Joana, a small river that still flows through the heart of Andaraí, dividing Maxwell Street. Imagine the early days, when the area we now know as Andaraí was dense forest, teeming with these nocturnal creatures.

Andaraí is one of Rio’s oldest neighborhoods, its roots tracing back to the 16th century. Jesuit priests established settlements here, cultivating sugarcane plantations in what was then a vast expanse known as Andaraí Grande. This larger area encompassed present-day Andaraí, Vila Isabel, Grajaú, and Aldeia Campista. Over time, Andaraí Grande was divided, giving birth to the distinct neighborhoods we know today. By the 19th century, Andaraí transitioned from agriculture to industry. It housed Rio’s first textile factory, the Fábrica São Pedro de Alcântara de Tecidos de Algodão, along with other businesses like the Companhia Hanseática, which later became the Brahma Brewery.

But Andaraí isn’t just about industry. Tucked into the hillsides lies Morro do Andaraí, a favela that emerged in the 1930s. This community, along with neighboring favelas like Arrelia, Buraco Quente, Jamelão, and Morro do Cruz, forms the Complexo do Andaraí. Morro do Andaraí is a place of vibrant culture and strong community ties, with organizations like the Grêmio Recreativo Santo Agostinho and the Associação de Moradores do Morro do Andaraí playing key roles in its social fabric. Andaraí even boasts its own samba school, Flor da Mina, founded in 1962, a testament to the area’s rich Afro-Brazilian heritage.

As we stand here, imagine the layers of history beneath our feet: from indigenous settlements to colonial plantations, industrial growth to the rise of vibrant communities. Andaraí is a microcosm of Rio de Janeiro itself, a blend of old and new, tradition and progress, all woven together along the banks of the “River of Bats”.
