Have you ever dreamt of escaping the hustle and bustle of Jakarta? Ancol Dreamland Theme Park offers just that. Ancol Dreamland, also known as Taman Impian Jaya Ancol, is Jakarta’s sprawling seaside escape. It sits on Jakarta’s waterfront in North Jakarta. Ancol Dreamland first opened its gates in 1966. It has since grown into Southeast Asia’s largest integrated tourism area.
Ancol Dreamland wasn’t always a dreamland. The area was once a mosquito-infested swamp. It was a breeding ground for malaria. President Sukarno envisioned transforming this marshland into an entertainment hub. This idea clashed with the initial plan for an industrial zone. Governor Ali Sadikin spearheaded Ancol’s development in 1966. The first attraction, Bina Ria Ancol beach, became a popular spot. Its drive-in theater was a major draw in the 1970s. A golf course, swimming pool, oceanarium, Putri Duyung cottages, Hotel Horison, and even a casino followed. Dunia Fantasi, or “Dufan,” the theme park, arrived in 1984.
Today, Ancol Dreamland occupies over 552 hectares. It houses an array of attractions. These include hotels, cottages, beaches, a theme park, traditional markets, an oceanarium, a golf course, and a marina. Dunia Fantasi boasts over 40 rides. It even includes an international-standard roller coaster, Halilintar. Other highlights include the Niagara-gara log flume, the Istana Boneka, and the Balada Kera animatronics show. Atlantis Water Adventure, built on the site of a former swimming arena, is another popular draw. This water park offers a wave pool, a lazy river, and various water slides. It also has several restaurants with international cuisines. Ocean Dream Samudra presents animal shows. Sea World Ancol offers the unique Antasena tunnel, a touch pool, and a shark aquarium.
Ancol Dreamland has had its share of incidents. In 2011, a decorative wall at Atlantis Water Adventure collapsed due to corrosion. This incident injured several visitors. The park faced scrutiny and had to undergo audits before rebuilding. Despite these setbacks, Ancol Dreamland remains a beloved destination. It is easily accessible by car, motorcycle, train, or the Transjakarta BRT. The park even offers a free shuttle bus service, Wara-Wiri, and a gondola system. Ancol Dreamland continues to evolve. Future plans include further expansion through land reclamation. New attractions are planned. These aim to solidify Ancol Dreamland’s place as a premier entertainment destination. Ancol Dreamland offers a diverse range of attractions. There truly is something for everyone. It remains a testament to Sukarno’s vision. This vision transformed a once-undesirable area into a vibrant recreational hub.
