Amidst the bustling energy of Saint-Denis, the Ancienne Pharmacie Centrale stands as a testament to a bygone era. This imposing structure, once the heart of France’s pharmaceutical industry, whispers tales of innovation and industry. The Ancienne Pharmacie Centrale began its life in 1862. It was built for Menier, a prominent pharmaceutical and chocolate manufacturer. The architect, Jules Saulnier, also known for his work on the Menier chocolate factory in Noisiel, designed a sprawling complex. The design spanned approximately 30,000 square meters. The Ancienne Pharmacie Centrale became a hub of activity. In the early 20th century, it employed 415 people. The factory produced a diverse range of products. These ranged from industrial chemicals and alkaloids to pharmaceutical products, both with and without sugar, and even quinine salts. The site also housed mechanical and carpentry workshops, research labs, and administrative buildings. Each building’s architecture reflected its purpose. The workshops, constructed with aesthetically pleasing timber frames, showcased the beauty of industrial design. The Ancienne Pharmacie Centrale eventually changed hands in 1869. It was sold to the newly established Pharmacie Centrale de France. This marked a significant expansion for the company. It made their Saint-Denis location the largest pharmaceutical sales house in France. Over the years, the Ancienne Pharmacie Centrale diversified its operations. It expanded into the trade of bandages and surgical instruments. After serving as a vital part of the French pharmaceutical landscape for over a century, the Pharmacie Centrale de France relocated to Ardèche in 1982. The Saint-Denis site was taken over by the Comptoir Français des Produits Aromatiques (CFPA), which operated there until 1997. Today, remnants of this once-great complex still stand. The director’s building, the gatekeeper’s lodge, a workshop, a metal hall, and the iconic 37-meter chimney remain. This chimney, adorned with polychrome brick geometric patterns, slate inlays, and dressed stone elements, proudly displays the date 1862 and the letter “M” for Menier. The Ancienne Pharmacie Centrale, now known as “L’Usine,” has been repurposed as an event space. Yet, its historical significance remains. In 1994, parts of the buildings, including the magnificent chimney, were listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments. This recognition ensures that the legacy of the Ancienne Pharmacie Centrale continues to inspire and intrigue visitors.
