Founded in 1236 by Blanche of Castile the Ancienne abbaye de Maubuisson stands before you. A testament to royal patronage and Cistercian piety this magnificent abbey witnessed centuries of history. Imagine Blanche herself a powerful queen regent laying the foundation stone. She envisioned a haven for noblewomen a royal retreat and a final resting place for royalty. The abbey thrived for centuries. Its wealth ensured survival even through the Hundred Years War.

Within these walls significant events unfolded. King Philip the Fair famously ordered the arrest of the Knights Templar from Maubuisson in 1307. The abbey’s strategic location and royal connections made it a center of power. Its impressive grounds spanned 32 hectares. The abbey church was strikingly tall according to a 16th-century account. It featured a remarkable white marble altarpiece sadly destroyed during the Revolution. The abbey’s cloisters separated the nuns’ quarters from the outside world.

Maubuisson served as a royal necropolis. Blanche of Castile herself may have been buried here. Other notable burials include Bonne of Luxembourg and members of the royal family. The abbey cemetery housed the remains of many nuns. Later it was unfortunately destroyed to make way for a cloister gallery. The abbey’s sophisticated plumbing system was state-of-the-art for its time. It utilized two nearby watercourses. This efficient system also powered a mill and reused water.

The abbey’s fate changed dramatically after the French Revolution. It was sold at auction and transformed into a military hospital. Later it became a quarry then an agricultural farm. Finally in 1978 the Département du Val d’Oise acquired the abbey. Extensive restoration followed transforming Maubuisson into the Centre of Contemporary Arts you see today. The abbey’s rich history continues to resonate. Its modern purpose now centers on art. Exhibitions showcase contemporary works bringing new life to this ancient site.

Explore the grounds. Marvel at the enduring structures. Let the legacy of Blanche of Castile and the Cistercian nuns inspire you. They built and rebuilt this abbey amidst conflict. They left behind a site of breathtaking beauty and enduring historical significance. The Ancienne abbaye de Maubuisson is not only a place of historical importance. It is also a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. A true treasure in the heart of Val d’Oise.
