Gazing out from this very spot can you imagine ships navigating the Black Sea? Anadolu Feneri stands tall a sentinel guarding the Bosphorus entrance. This historical lighthouse has guided sailors for centuries. It is a beacon of hope for those at sea.

Anadolu Feneri is more than just a lighthouse. It marks the northern boundary of the Port of Istanbul. A connecting line to Rumeli Feneri on the European side defines this boundary. The village around Anadolu Feneri shares its name a testament to the lighthouse’s importance.

Let’s step back in time. In 1755 French engineer François Baron de Tott noted a lighthouse here. But the real push came during the Crimean War. To ensure safe passage for French and British warships lighthouses were needed on both sides of the Bosphorus. The French built Rumeli Feneri. They also improved Anadolu Feneri. May 15 1856 marked a new dawn. Both lighthouses began operations.

Imagine the scene. Warships steaming towards the Bosphorus guided by these lights. Anadolu Feneri was operated by the French until 1933. Then Turkish authorities took control. Today the Coastal Safety Authority maintains it.

The Anadolu Feneri stands on Yum Burnu Point. This is 75 meters above sea level. The white tower itself is 19 meters tall. Its masonry construction has stood the test of time. A gallery surrounds the lantern room. A two-story keeper’s house is attached. This housed the family who lived here.

Initially kerosene lit the way. Later Dalén light using acetylene gas was used. Now electricity powers the beacon. But a butane gas system stands ready as backup. Every 20 seconds the lantern flashes. Its light reaches 20 nautical miles. Think of that beam cutting through the darkness a lifeline for sailors.

Anadolu Feneri carries the code “TUR 014”. Its radio call sign is TC2ALH. It is more than a navigational aid. Anadolu Feneri is open to the public. It welcomes visitors as a historical site.

The air here is filled with the scent of the sea. Fishing boats bob gently in the distance. Imagine dining at a local fish restaurant savoring the fresh catch. The views of the Bosphorus are stunning especially at sunset.

Anadolu Feneri. It is a place where history nature and the sea converge. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty and its enduring legacy. It is a reminder of Istanbul’s strategic importance. It is also a symbol of guidance and safety.
