Glistening jets dance skyward a mesmerizing ballet of water and light. Welcome to the International Fountain. This iconic fountain stands as a symbol of Seattle’s World’s Fair.

Originally named Mercer Playground the area transformed for the Century 21 Exposition. Envisioned as the centerpiece it was designed to reflect mankind’s reach for outer space. In 1960 a design competition sought a light water and sculpture display. Kazuyuki Matsushita and Hideki Shimizu won. These Japanese architects were employees of Taisei Construction Company in Tokyo. Their vision stressed water’s shape and movement over sculptural accessories. They wanted to express beauty and might only by means of water. The jury praised their scheme for its grand scale.

The International Fountain opened in 1962. It quickly became a focal point. The fountain featured music lights and 117 water nozzles. Children loved playing in the basin. The original fountain had a sunflower appearance. It had a dome covered in dark amber glass. Floodlights illuminated the water at night.

However by the 1990s the fountain needed renovation. In 1995 WET Design revitalized the fountain. The rocks were removed and the dome was reconfigured. The design increased accessibility and showmanship. The new fountain was rededicated on October 28 1995.

The International Fountain has a large bowl. It measures 220 feet in diameter. A stainless-steel dome sits at the center. The dome has numerous jets nearly flush with its surface. Visitors can approach and play with the fountain. The fountain boasts micro shooters fleur-de-lis and super shooters. The super shooters propel water up to 120 feet high. Mist nozzles create fog. There are floodlights between the micro shooters and the dome.

Did you know the International Fountain recycles its water? It uses three types of natural treatments. This ensures the water is exceptionally clean.

In 2021 the fountain underwent another refresh. Updates included new LED lighting and micro shooters. They also replaced the control panel and anemometer.

The International Fountain continues to captivate visitors. It represents Seattle’s forward-thinking spirit. The fountain invites everyone to experience the beauty of water light and music. This place offers a refreshing escape. This is a symbol of innovation and community.
