Amidst the urban tapestry of Chicago, Amundsen High School stands proudly. A tribute to a fearless explorer, the school carries the legacy of Roald Amundsen, the first man to reach the South Pole. Amundsen High School opened its doors in 1929. It’s nestled between the vibrant neighborhoods of Ravenswood, Andersonville, and Lincoln Square. This institution isn’t just a building; it’s a living testament to the spirit of discovery. Did you know the school was initially a junior high? It transitioned to a senior high in 1933. For a brief period, it even housed elementary students and a branch of Harry S Truman College. The school’s motto, “Accountable, Honorable, Scholarly,” reflects its commitment to fostering well-rounded individuals. Amundsen High School boasts a rich history. The architect Paul Gerhardt designed the building. Above the main entrance, a powerful quote is inscribed: “A brave man may fall but cannot yield.” This sentiment embodies the resilience and determination encouraged within its walls. Amundsen High School is more than just academics. It’s a place where students discover their passions. The school’s athletic teams, known as the Vikings, compete in the Chicago Public League. The boys’ soccer team has a particularly impressive record. They’ve been public league champions five times and Class AA champions three times. Jorndt Field, the school’s stadium, was renovated in 2004. It was renamed in honor of Louis C. Jorndt. He was a dedicated teacher and coach at Amundsen from 1930 to 1953. Interestingly, scenes from the movie “The Express: The Ernie Davis Story” were filmed on this very field. Amundsen High School has also nurtured remarkable talent within its halls. Notable alumni include Bob Fosse, the Tony Award-winning theatrical director and choreographer. Michael Mann, the acclaimed film director known for “Heat” and “The Insider,” also walked these halls. From its humble beginnings as a junior high to its current status as a respected institution, Amundsen High School has continuously evolved. It continues to inspire generations of students to embrace the spirit of exploration and strive for excellence. It stands as a beacon of knowledge and opportunity in the heart of Chicago.
