“Romance can lead to unexpected journeys,” they whispered as they strolled through here. This brings us to Amorparken. It is a green oasis nestled between Rigshospitalet and Tagensvej in Copenhagen. Amorparken extends Fredens Park. It offers a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle.

Amorparken emerged in 1910. It was built alongside Fælledparken. Amorparken was designed as a symmetrical garden. This contrasted Fælledparken’s open grasslands. The park’s layout provided a structured retreat.

Rumor has it that the name Amorparken stems from its proximity to the Fødselsstiftelsen. This was a maternity hospital. Supposedly, dalliances in the park sometimes led to a visit to the hospital.

At the corner of Tagensvej and Blegdamsvej stands a striking sculpture. It is Rudolph Tegner’s “Mod lyset” or “Towards the Light”. Erected in 1909, it commemorates Niels Finsen. He was a physician who discovered light’s healing properties for skin diseases.

In Amorparken’s northern section, you will find a statue of Hans Wilhelm Meyer. Meyer was a physician. He gained global recognition for inventing a method to remove polyps. The statue was created by the Finnish artist W. M. Runeberg. It was initially placed on Strandboulevarden in 1898. Later, it was moved to Amorparken. At the base stands Hygæa. She is the Greek goddess of health.

At the heart of Amorparken, behold “Moderen” or “The Mother”. Carl Bonnesen sculpted it in 1932. Its subject alludes to the nearby Fødselsstiftelsen.

Amorparken covers 3.3 hectares. In the early 1900s, Rigshospitalet was constructed next to the park. Blegdamshospitalet was across Tagensvej where the Panum Institute is today. The park provided distance between the two hospitals. This might have been to prevent the spread of disease.

Take a moment within Amorparken. Reflect on its history and art. Consider its role in Copenhagen’s landscape. It is a place of beauty, remembrance, and perhaps a little romance.
