Amerika Plads is a public square in Copenhagen’s Østerbro district. It’s more than just an open space. It represents a transformation. This area was once part of the Freeport of Copenhagen. Let’s talk history. This area was once the steam ferry terrain. Steam ferries used to travel to Malmö. The Copenhagen-Malmö link started in 1895. It connected with the opening of the new free port. However, the ferry route was discontinued in 1974. Later, DanLink operated a cargo line here. It ran until 2000 when the Øresund Bridge opened.
In the late 1990s, redevelopment began. The location was attractive. It sat between Østerbro and the city center. The Port of Copenhagen partnered with private companies. Together, they aimed to create a vibrant urban environment. Dutch architects West 8 developed a masterplan. The plan focused on diverse architecture. The new buildings feature public courtyards. This expands street areas and encourages movement.
Notice the former Free Port Railway Station. It dominates Amerika Plads. The station was dismantled in 2002. Then, it was rebuilt in 2005. Now, it serves as a café pavilion. It stands near its original location. Heinrich Wenck designed the building. He also designed Copenhagen Central Station. This station once served as a hub for the Copenhagen-Malmö ferries.
Look around at the buildings. Nordisk Fjer’s former headquarters is here. It was built in 1901. Today, it houses Banedanmark. The Twin Warehouses also stand here. They are known as Warehouse D and E. These were built in the 1920s. You can find other historic buildings along Dampfærgevej.
See the modern buildings too. The Copper Tower stands on the north side. Arkitema designed this copper-clad office building. It houses the law firm Plesner and an Italian supermarket. On the south side, you will find The Lighthouse. Lundgaard & Tranberg designed this residential tower.
Amerika Plads connects to the city. It sits between Østerport and Nordhavn stations. These are on the S-train main railway line. So, it is easy to reach from anywhere in Copenhagen.
