Established in 1764 the Ameos Klinikum Dr Heines Bremen boasts a rich history. It’s one of Germany’s oldest psychiatric clinics. Even more impressive it’s the oldest privately owned one. Friedrich Engelken a man who sailed to the East Indies and experienced opium’s effects started it all. He treated mental illness after training as a surgeon. His family ran the clinic for generations.

In 1910 Dr Walter Benning took over. He modernized the facilities. Sadly during the Nazi era around 120 patients underwent forced sterilizations. Some long-term patients were victims of euthanasia. These dark chapters are now being investigated.

Dr Karl-Dieter Heines led the clinic from 1954 to 1991. He aimed to create a modern therapy center. He sold it in 1992 establishing a foundation for elderly care. The Ameos Group acquired the clinic in 2003. The clinic continues its important work. It offers various treatments including general psychiatric care. They treat anxiety disorders acute and chronic depressions. They also specialize in trauma therapy and substance abuse treatment.

The Ameos Klinikum Dr Heines isn’t just a hospital. It’s a place that reflects Bremen’s history. Its evolution highlights shifts in mental healthcare.
