Earhart’s life was filled with record-breaking flights. She flew from Harbour Grace to Northern Ireland in 1932. In 1935 she completed a solo flight from Honolulu to Oakland. She also flew solo from Los Angeles to Mexico City and back to New York.
But it was her attempt to fly around the world in 1937 that cemented her legacy. Sadly during that flight Earhart disappeared near Howland Island. No trace of her or her plane was ever found.
Despite her disappearance Amelia Earhart’s impact endures. She became an international hero inspiring generations of women. She dared to challenge what society thought was impossible.
It’s important to remember her connection to Hawaii. In 1935 Earhart became the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland. It was a dangerous 2408-mile flight. Ten other fliers had died trying to make the journey before her.
On December 27 1934 Amelia Earhart arrived in Honolulu with her husband George Putnam. She planned her historic flight to Oakland.
There was controversy surrounding her flight. Businessmen worried about the cost of a potential sea search if she went missing. But Earhart was determined. On January 11 1935 she took off from Wheeler Airfield.
After an 18-hour flight Earhart landed in Oakland to a cheering crowd. She had made history.
Later in March 1937 Earhart returned to Hawaii as part of her round-the-world attempt. During takeoff from Luke Field her plane crashed. Though no one was hurt the flight was delayed and eventually rerouted.
