Did the stones of Amcazade Külliyesi always echo with the murmur of scholars? Let’s unravel the tale of this historic complex, here in the heart of Istanbul. Amcazade Külliyesi wasn’t always a museum. It began as a vibrant center of learning, commissioned by Amcazade Hüseyin Pasha between 1697 and 1702. This grand vizier, nephew of the influential Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, envisioned a place where knowledge would flourish. The complex, initially comprising a mosque, a library, a school, sixteen madrasa cells, and a sebil (public fountain), sprawled across 2580 square meters. A mausoleum was added later, becoming the final resting place for Hüseyin Pasha himself and his daughter, Rahmiye Hanım. The vakfiye (endowment deed) from 1700 reveals Hüseyin Pasha’s focus on Quranic recitation and the art of Tajwid. Imagine the courtyard buzzing with students, their voices rising and falling in rhythmic recitation. Amcazade Külliyesi, designed by architect İbrahim Ağa, stands as a testament to a period where Baroque architecture began to emerge in Turkey. Yet, it retains a strong connection to classical Ottoman design. The külliye faced its share of trials. Fires in 1718, 1755, and 1896, along with earthquakes in 1755 and 1894, left their mark. Each time, Amcazade Külliyesi was painstakingly restored. The most significant restoration occurred in 1754-55, under the supervision of Rahmiye Hanım. Another major renovation in 1940, led by Ekrem Hakkı Ayverdi, breathed new life into the aging structure. In 1966, it was transformed into a museum with ten sections, showcasing Turkish artifacts and art. Sadly, it closed shortly after, but the designation “Turkish Artifacts and Art Museum” remains. Amcazade Külliyesi tells a story of resilience and transformation. From a bustling center of learning to a repository of historical artifacts, its journey reflects the changing tides of Istanbul itself. Look around you. The layout of the complex is a testament to Ottoman architectural ingenuity. The buildings, constructed from cut stone and brick, are arranged around a spacious courtyard, with a şadırvan (fountain) at its center. The mosque, with its twenty-two marble columns and surrounding portico, dominates the courtyard. Above you, domes, cross vaults, and mirror vaults create a sense of grandeur. Intricate classical motifs adorn the interior of the domes. The library, a square, two-story building with a single dome, is a blend of architectural styles, showcasing elements of the Empire period. The Amcazade Hüseyin Pasha Library’s collection, initially around 500 books, grew over time through various donations. These books are now housed in the Süleymaniye Library. As you explore Amcazade Külliyesi, remember the legacy of Hüseyin Pasha. His vision of a center for knowledge and spiritual growth continues to resonate within these walls.
