On a warm Singapore night in May 1990, a tragic event unfolded at Amber Tower. This brightly colored beacon, also known as the Yellow Tower, stands as a silent witness to a story of love and loss. Kelly Tan Ah Hong and James Soh, classmates for nearly a decade, had just begun their romantic journey two days prior. They chose Amber Tower, a popular spot for couples at East Coast Park, for their date. As they sat on the spiral staircase, chatting and enjoying the ocean view, two masked men appeared, their presence unnoticed by the young couple. Suddenly, the men attacked. James was stabbed in the back but instinctively fought back, managing to dislodge one assailant. Kelly, stabbed in the neck, fled down the stairs. James, weakened but determined, followed, finding Kelly on the ground, struggling to move. Their attackers had vanished. He stumbled to a nearby restaurant for help, collapsing as he pleaded for assistance for Kelly. James survived, but tragically, Kelly succumbed to her injuries. The Amber Tower now stands not only as a navigational aid for ships but also as a somber reminder of this unsolved crime. The masked assailants were never apprehended, the murder weapon never found. Over the years, rumors of a haunting have emerged, fueled by the tragic event. Some claim to hear wails at night, while others report seeing bloodstains, believing them to be signs of Kelly’s restless spirit. The Amber Tower remains a place of mystery, its bright facade concealing a dark chapter in Singapore’s history.
