Amidst the heart of Copenhagen, Amalienborg Palace stands as a timeless symbol of royal heritage. Amalienborg isn’t just one building. It’s a complex of four identical palaces, each with its own unique story. These palaces weren’t originally intended for royalty. They were built for noble families in the 1750s. King Frederik V envisioned a grand new district, Frederiksstaden, to celebrate his family’s 300-year reign. Amalienborg was the centerpiece. The architect Nicolai Eigtved brought the vision to life, designing the four palaces in elegant Rococo style. He didn’t live to see them finished, but other architects meticulously followed his plans. Fate intervened in 1794. A devastating fire ravaged Christiansborg Palace, the royal residence. The royal family needed a new home, and quickly. The noble families residing in Amalienborg’s palaces agreed to sell. The palaces were transformed into a royal residence. They’ve been home to the Danish Royal Family ever since. The four palaces surround an octagonal courtyard. At its center stands an imposing equestrian statue of Frederik V. This statue alone cost more than the entire construction of Amalienborg. It was crafted by the French sculptor Jacques Saly. He started in 1753 and it took over 17 years to complete. Now, at noon each day, a captivating spectacle unfolds at Amalienborg. The Royal Life Guards perform the changing of the guard. This tradition dates back to 1658. The guards march from their barracks at Rosenborg Castle, their scarlet tunics and bearskin hats a vibrant display. They march through the city streets, often accompanied by a band, arriving at Amalienborg for the midday ceremony. Today, Amalienborg continues to be a vital part of Danish history. Two of the palaces, Christian VII’s Palace and Christian VIII’s Palace, are open to the public. They offer a glimpse into the lives of past royals and the grandeur of the palace.
