Am Art Space

Tucked away on Fengxian Road, Am Art Space isn’t just a building. It’s a living, breathing testament to Shanghai’s vibrant art scene. Am Art Space began its life in 2008. It was founded by artists, for artists. They envisioned a “room for introspection.” This space has nurtured creativity and served as a platform for artistic expression ever since. Am Art Space isn’t confined to just visual arts. It embraces a multitude of forms, from performance art to multimedia installations. It hosts international residency programs, supporting young curators and fostering artistic exchange. Think of it as a cultural melting pot, where artists from around the globe converge to share their visions. Am Art Space moved to its current location on Fengxian Road in 2011. The founders, Lam and Jam, sought an affordable space in the heart of the city. This move marked a turning point, bringing more structure to the residency program. They began charging a fee, allowing them to take on more responsibility for the resident artists. They even collaborated with the Goethe-Institut China and the German Consulate in Shanghai. Am Art Space has been the birthplace of many fascinating projects. One notable example is the “Windowless Scenery” series. This 15-month performance project featured Chinese experimental sound artists. Each artist performed a unique hour-long piece, transforming the space with sound. Am Art Space also nurtures young curatorial talent through its “Young Curator’s Program”. It even houses “ma Kit,” a unique concept shop born from a collaboration between curators and artists. This repurposed micro-studio adds another layer to the space’s dynamic offerings. Am Art Space continues to evolve and adapt, reflecting the ever-changing landscape of the art world. It’s a place where boundaries are pushed, ideas are exchanged, and creativity flourishes.
