Picture this Alvito a small town nestled in the Alentejo region of Portugal. Alvito boasts a rich history stretching back to the Neolithic period. Roman villae dotted the landscape. Visigoths and Moors later occupied the area. The Portuguese conquered Alvito in 1234 during the Reconquista. King Afonso III gifted Alvito to Estêvão Anes in 1251. Anes was the kingdom’s chancellor. He encouraged settlement of the area.

Alvito’s story truly takes flight in 1280. The village received a foral a letter of feudal rights. King Dinis I confirmed these rights in 1283. An annual fair established in 1296 marked Alvito’s rapid growth. King John I later gifted Alvito to knight Diogo Lobo in 1387. This was in exchange for his service in the Battle of Aljubarrota. The rulers of Alvito were granted the title of Baron in 1475.

The 15th and 16th centuries were a golden age for Alvito. Its population boomed reaching 1700 inhabitants by 1527. The Alvito Castle underwent a significant rebuild between 1494 and 1504. Its architecture and decoration blend Manueline and Mudéjar styles typical of the Alentejo. The main church the Igreja Matriz also reflects this unique blend of styles. It dates from the early 16th century.

Economic stagnation hit Alvito after the 18th century. This lasted until the 20th century. Today Alvito embraces its tourist potential. In 1993 the Alvito Castle was transformed into a luxury hotel. It is now part of the Pousadas de Portugal brand. Alvito’s annual Feira dos Santos fair is a major event attracting visitors from across Portugal. It celebrates local produce. Alvito is also known for its unique herbs. These are featured in local festivals and cuisine. Alvito’s captivating blend of history architecture and culture makes it a truly special place. A visit will leave you enchanted by its charm and rich past.
