Whispers of Ottoman grandeur… do you hear them? They echo around the Altunizade Mosque. Right here in the heart of Üsküdar, the Altunizade Mosque stands as a testament to a bygone era. It is also known as the İsmail Zühtü Pasha Mosque. This mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a time capsule, transporting us back to the 19th century. Altunizade İsmail Zühtü Pasha, a prominent figure of his time, commissioned this architectural marvel in 1865. He rests in a place of honor within the mosque’s courtyard. The Altunizade Mosque is likely the last example of Ottoman mosque architecture in Istanbul’s Anatolian side. Originally, the mosque was the heart of a bustling külliye, a social complex. This complex included an infant school, a traditional Turkish bath, a time-keeping office for prayer, a fountain, and lodgings for the mosque’s staff. There were even shops and a bakery. Today, only a few of these shops remain, whispering stories of a vibrant past. Despite the passage of time, the Altunizade Mosque is remarkably well-preserved. The Altunizade Mosque showcases a unique blend of architectural styles, notably the Baroque Revival style. Its large windows, a distinctive feature of this style, flood the interior with natural light. A small courtyard, accessed through three gates, embraces the mosque. An inscription graces the largest gate, while another adorns the wall facing the Kaaba in Mecca. Stepping inside, you’ll find yourself in a covered narthex. Three doors lead from here into the main sanctuary. A small, ornate mihrab, a niche for prayer, is nestled within the narthex wall. This allowed for prayer even when the main sanctuary was closed. Two wooden staircases rise from the narthex to the women’s and muezzin’s sections. The mosque itself is a quadratic structure, built with limestone ashlar and plastered interiors. Hand-carved figures adorn the sanctuary walls, adding a touch of artistry to the sacred space. A single dome, supported by four arches and four corner columns, crowns the mosque. The dome’s inner surface is divided into 16 zones, painted in two alternating designs. Its blue center, embellished with a Quranic verse, draws the eye upwards. The marble minbar, shaped like a drinking glass, is a unique feature reminiscent of the Hırka-i Şerif Mosque. A single minaret, with a stone spire shaped like a grand vizier’s turban, completes the mosque’s silhouette. A decorative line of stars encircles the minaret’s midsection. Large windows on the lower and upper levels illuminate the interior, creating a sense of spaciousness. The Altunizade Mosque isn’t merely a building. It’s a living narrative of Ottoman history, a whispered prayer echoing through time.
