The Marienplatz, the heart of Munich’s Altstadt, isn’t just a pretty square. It’s a living testament to centuries of history. The Altstadt, or Old Town, sits on the edge of the Isar River in the heart of Munich. Its streets are a tapestry of cobblestone and history, where medieval architecture whispers secrets and modern life buzzes with energy.

You are standing in front of the New Town Hall, a grand building that was erected in the late 19th century. Built in the Gothic Revival style, it stands as a proud symbol of Munich’s civic pride. Look up at the intricate details of its facade – spires reaching towards the sky, arches carved with stories, and windows like watchful eyes. This spectacular building was constructed in response to a period of tremendous growth in Munich’s population. Between 1801 and 1861, the city’s population boomed from 40,000 to 120,000 people. This growth demanded a new, grand city hall to represent the changing city. So, the city fathers commissioned a new building, one that would be equal in size and splendor to the majestic Residenz. And that’s what you are looking at now.

But the New Town Hall’s greatest treasure is its Glockenspiel, a mechanical puppet show that takes place every day at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., and 5 p.m. The Glockenspiel is housed in the tower of the New Town Hall, and it’s a must-see for any visitor to Munich. For a total of 15 minutes, 43 bells ring out and elaborate scenes unfold. The main attraction is the Schöfflertanz, the Dance of the Cooper, which the puppet show’s figures perform to a lively tune. The story behind the dance is that in the 16th century, a coppersmith, or Schöffler, saved a local lord from a fire. To thank him for his loyalty, the Lord gave him a dance in his honor. And that’s the Schöfflertanz, a dance of gratitude!

The Marienplatz was a bustling marketplace as early as 1158. It was here, under the watchful eyes of the Frauenkirche, that the city of Munich was established. In the 1300s, the Marienplatz was already famous for its enormous fish fountain. Today, it’s a popular spot to grab a bite to eat or a beer, but back then, it was all about fresh fish, meat, and local vegetables. It was a place where the citizens of Munich came together not just to buy and sell, but also to socialise and connect with each other.

Today, the spirit of the Marienplatz is that of community. People gather around the fountain, stroll past the grand buildings, and enjoy a glass of Bavarian brew. The history of the Marienplatz is a story of growth, innovation, and beauty. So, the next time you visit the Marienplatz, remember the stories of those who came before you, and cherish the spirit of community that still lives on in the heart of the Altstadt.
