Born in Windsor on July 3 1907 Alton C Parker’s life was a testament to service and community. This plaque commemorates a remarkable man. Alton was the son of Immanuel Crawford Parker and Ida Mae Joiner. His father owned a confectionery store on Mercer Street. Alton’s dedication to his community began early. He received his education at Mercer Street School Windsor Collegiate Institute Lowe Technical School and the Detroit Institute of Technology. He became a mechanic in Detroit. Then he took a pay cut to join the Windsor Police Force in 1942. He became the first Black uniformed police officer in Windsor. He later became the first Black detective in Canada. Alton served thirty years with the police force.
But his contributions extended far beyond law enforcement. He was a member of many organizations. These included the Central Citizens’ Association the Goodfellows Club the Windsor Male Chorus the Greater Windsor Foundation and the Baptist Men’s Council. He even co-founded Apartment Living for Physically Handicapped Adults. Alton received numerous awards for his tireless work. He received the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal a Harry Jerome Award and an honorary doctorate from the University of Windsor. He was also appointed to the Order of Canada.
Alton and his wife Evelyn Parker were known for their generosity. They started Uncle Al’s Kids’ Party in 1966. This annual event provided a day of fun for underprivileged children. They hosted over 1000 children annually. They paid for the party themselves. Alton and Evelyn believed every child deserved a celebration. Broadhead Park the location of the party was renamed Alton C Parker Park in 1976. This demonstrates the immense impact Alton had on Windsor. He truly embodied the spirit of community service.
Alton’s legacy lives on through his family. His daughter Freida Parker Steele was also a pioneer. She became one of the first Black women to graduate from Hotel Dieu School of Nursing. This was despite facing significant discrimination. Freida’s accomplishments reflect the values instilled by her parents. The Alton C Parker Plaque is a powerful symbol.
