A wave of shoppers surges past. The energy of Alto Avellaneda is palpable.
Alto Avellaneda isn’t just a shopping mall. It’s a hub a heart beating in the south of Greater Buenos Aires. Since its opening in 1995 it has become the main shopping center in the area. It was initially known as the Alto Avellaneda Shopping Mall.
This wasn’t always a smooth journey. In 2006 two significant fires tested its resilience. One in March at The Mall Premium Store saw over 2000 people evacuated. Another just weeks later at the Fravega appliance warehouse caused further disruption and more evacuations. Thankfully both incidents resulted only in material damage.
But Alto Avellaneda adapted. It underwent a major renovation and expansion in 2008. The architects Pfeiffer-Zurdo modernized the space. Its original logo was redesigned in 2007. Today you see a more contemporary and welcoming space.
More than just retail Alto Avellaneda has hosted major events. In 2006 it served as the venue for bowling at the South American Games. It showcases a mix of local and international brands. A Cinemark multiplex with 8 screens including a 4D cinema provides entertainment. There’s a food court and even a Neverland play area. Originally a Falabella department store and then a Sacoa games area this space now caters to families. The hypermarket Chango Mas and stores like Easy and Norauto offer additional convenience.
Notice the vast parking area. Alto Avellaneda boasts 2500 parking spaces. Accessibility is key with designated spots for people with reduced mobility and pregnant women. Five entrances and exits ensure smooth traffic flow. The mall’s strategic location near Avellaneda’s city hall and the University of Buenos Aires adds to its appeal.
Alto Avellaneda is more than brick and mortar. It’s a community gathering place. A place of shopping leisure and connection. It’s a testament to the spirit of Avellaneda and the ever-evolving landscape of Argentine commerce. Its history is etched into its very structure a tale of growth adaptation and unwavering community spirit.
