Once named Hohenmünster, the Altmünster Quelle whispers tales of Mainz’s oldest monastery. Legend says Saint Bilhildis founded it around 700. She was the niece of Bishop Rigibert. We are standing at a place with a long history.

Originally a small convent for women, the Altmünster followed Benedictine rules. Later, in the 13th century, it joined the Cistercian order. The monastery wasn’t always here. It used to stand between Bingerstrasse and Bahnhofstrasse. In the 17th century, it moved south. It was rebuilt in the early Baroque style.

The Altmünster was once richly adorned. Its most important relic was the Sudarium of Christ. This was displayed every Easter Monday. Today, it’s in the Mainz Cathedral. Imagine the crowds that once gathered. They came to witness this sacred cloth.

In 1802, the French gave Altmünster to Mainz’s new United Protestant community. The Jacobin Benedictines had to leave. For the first time since the Thirty Years’ War, a Protestant service took place here. But the Protestants’ time was short-lived.

Napoleon ordered them to move to the smaller Welschnonnenkirche. The French military took over Altmünster. It became a maternity hospital in 1806. Then, in 1808, it transformed into a military hospital. The military continued to use Altmünster. From 1895, it served as a Protestant garrison preaching site. Later, it became a French Catholic garrison church.

In 1929, the Mainz Protestant community bought the church back. They paid 88,000 Reichsmarks. The Altmünster became the city’s third Protestant church. This followed St. Johannis and Christuskirche. During the Nazi era, the church was a center for the “German Christians” movement. It became a garrison church again in 1936.

World War II brought destruction. Altmünster was bombed. The community life stopped completely. Only in the late 1950s did rebuilding begin. Baurat Otto Vogel redesigned the church in the style of the time. The east facade lost its decorations. The late Renaissance portal was torn down. The towers were changed and the windows made smaller. The main entrance moved west to Walpodenstrasse.

The Altmünsterkirche was reconsecrated in 1960. Since then, it has served the Altmünster community. It is a place of worship. Thanks to collaboration with the Musikhochschule, two organs stand here. Students practice on weekdays. The organs fill services with music on weekends and holidays.

Today, the Altmünster Quelle offers a moment of reflection. It stands as a reminder of Mainz’s layered past. This place has been a convent, a military hospital, and a Protestant church. It embodies resilience and change. Take a moment to appreciate its story. It is a story etched in stone and spirit.
