In 1892, a neo-Gothic marvel arose on the banks of the Rhine: the altes Pumphäuschen. This “old pump house,” as its name translates, was part of Bonn’s waterworks, a system vital to the city’s growth. Altes Pumphäuschen housed the powerful pumps that drew filtered water from the Rhine and distributed it throughout Bonn. For decades, the rhythmic chug of the pumps at altes Pumphäuschen was the heartbeat of the city, ensuring a steady supply of clean water to homes and businesses. However, the altes Pumphäuschen’s role in Bonn’s history took a dramatic turn in the late 20th century. With the old plenary chamber slated for demolition, the German Bundestag needed a temporary home. The altes Pumphäuschen, nestled in Gronau between the Bundeshaus and the Langer Eugen, was chosen. Transformed into a plenary hall, albeit a smaller one, altes Pumphäuschen witnessed history unfold within its walls. From 1986 to 1992, the debates and decisions that shaped Germany’s reunification echoed within the altes Pumphäuschen. Can you imagine the weight of those discussions, the intensity of the arguments, taking place in what was once a simple pump house? The cramped quarters of the altes Pumphäuschen, about half the size of the old plenary hall, fostered an unusual sense of camaraderie amongst the representatives. This intimate setting, within the repurposed altes Pumphäuschen, played a crucial role during a pivotal moment in German history. After the Bundestag returned to its newly constructed chamber, the altes Pumphäuschen continued to serve Bonn. It hosted international conferences, including a notable Tibet conference with the Dalai Lama in 1996. The last Bundestag session held in the altes Pumphäuschen took place in 1998. Today, altes Pumphäuschen and the surrounding waterworks buildings are part of the UN Campus. The altes Pumphäuschen’s story reflects Bonn’s transformation, from a city reliant on its pumping station to a hub of international diplomacy.
